I think that the main conflict of the story is MONEY. The reason I think that money is the conflict is because they don't have don't have a good roof and they have to keep on looking and checking to see if it's going to rain so it wont get in the house.Even though they dont have money the step father still gambles all the money that he can get on. Sometimes it may be everything and that's why Lakshmi gets into prostitution because she thinks that it's her responsibility to help her family get money and try to get a tin roof.

Sorry but i have to disagree with you, i think its man vs. society because if they knew Lakshmi was going to help them get money couldn't they have chosen anything better for her to do like for example sell stuff in the city, or actually go and clean houses. Don't you think? Why would they want to send her to a brothel if they know what goes on in those sick houses. well, thats my opinion. =)
